Northrop to Coffman is .4 miles

Dear FM,

It’s starting to feel like spring, the time of year when most of us can’t wait to get outside to take a walk or bike ride after a long winter of Netflix binge watching. Most of us have the opportunity to walk throughout the day, and the Wellness Program encourages us to walk 10K steps a day. That works out to roughly five miles, which seems like a lot, but it can add up quickly. Custodial workers, maintenance staff and tradespeople report that in the course of a shift, they can easily walk 10,000 steps and usually many more. In fact, I can’t think of a part of FM that doesn’t have a need to walk extensively throughout the day to cover our enormous campus. Even if you aren’t participating in 10K a Day, it’s still uplifting to take a stroll across our beautiful campuses to enjoy springtime.

Some of the distances below can help you estimate how much you walk.

East Bank
Northrop to Coffman 0.4 miles
Mech Engineering to Scott 0.2 miles

West Bank
Mondale to Carlson 0.3 miles
Anderson to Rarig Center 0.3 miles

North Campus
Donhowe to Rec Center 0.4 miles
Landcare to McNamara 0.7 miles

Health Sciences
Weisman to Moos Tower 0.5 miles
Boynton to Oak St. Parking 0.5 miles

St. Paul
Fac Mgmt Bldg to Pomeroy 0.2 miles
Ruttan Hall to Gymnasium 0.3 miles
Food Ops to Como Recycling 0.3 miles

Oh, and as you are out walking around, I would appreciate if you keep an eye out for anything we need to do as a department to keep our campus at its best. Take a moment to pick up that piece of paper drifting across the sidewalk and place it in the recycling bin and for larger jobs call the FM Call Center at 4-2900 so we can get it assigned to the right team.

Have a great week,
