Assistant Director of Landcare
I’m excited to announce that Tom Ritzer, University Landscape Architect, has accepted the role of Assistant Director, Landcare.Tom has served as the University Landscape Architect in the Landcare Department for the past 18 years and in his new position will be responsible for leadership of the Landcare department, including operations, finances, staff management, and landscape design and maintenance. Congratulations, Tom!
New Chilled Water team
We have a new FM team to plan and execute all maintenance of chilled water systems. The team will be led by Andy Madsen, who was selected from a highly talented group of applicants and brings extensive, in-depth knowledge of operations and maintenance of these critical systems. Andy previously worked as a team manager in the North Campus District. In his new role, he’ll report to Greg Berger, Associate Director, East Bank District, and will lead a team of six mechanics and three pipefitters. The team will work closely with our Energy Management staff to maximize the reliability of the campus chilled water systems. Please join me in welcoming Andy and the crew to this important work.
Collaboration across FM teams
Over the weekend, the Child Development building had a leak in a steam pipe under the building. Two teams within our Energy Management group -  Steam and Water Utilities - worked together to replace the piping and backfill the trench. Landcare responded quickly to protect a nearby tree during the excavation and they will also restore the site when the underground work is complete. This is a great example of several of our teams working together to resolve an unforeseen issue.
Wellness update
You only have about six weeks to earn those final wellness points for the year and receive at least $400 off next year’s insurance premiums. Check out the ways you can earn points; whether it’s exercising, volunteering, or completing digital workshops, there are still a lot of options.

  • Zap! 2017 Bike Challenge Begins July 15 Employees of 3M, Target and the University of Minnesota will be pitted against each other this summer in a semi-friendly competition for a gold-colored bike rack.  Learn more about the contest; how to get your bike "zapped"; and post flyers to encourage your office members to join the U of M team!
  • Farmer’s Market The U of M Farmers Market will return to Gateway Plaza on Wednesday, July 12 and will take place every Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. through September 27. The farmers will bring the freshest vegetables, berries, and flowers. Besides shopping for healthy food, the market is a great reason to get outside and enjoy our U community.  
  • Call for FM photos! Take a picture of something FM-related and send to Christie Wells to be included on the FM website or in the Weekly. Whether it’s a picture of an employee or team at work, a group activity or a beautiful aspect of our campus, we’d love to post your photo to share with the rest of the team. Dustin Hayes, Coordinator, Vendor Program Management, snapped the picture below of his oldest child checking out the staircase structure at Bruininks hall.
